Kesh Carnival 10k (by Karen Dolan)
The annual Kesh10k run has been a successful event on the local athletics calendar for over a decade. This year it is to be held on the 16th August and many athletes who have already completed the Irvinestown and Enniskillen 10k runs this summer are expected to take part. The event usually attracts a broad spectrum of standards and ages. Some regular holidaymakers to Fermanagh now plan their holiday around the event. Entries will be taken from 6pm and the race starts from the Community Centre at 7pm. The organisers of the event, are advising anyone who would like to enter the race to be at the community centre in Kesh before 6.30pm. Entry costs £5 for adults and £3 for under 18s. The Northern Ireland Amateur Athletics Federation do not recommend children under the age of 15 running in 10k races. Therefore the parent/guardian of anyone aged 14 or under wishing to compete in the event will have to sign a waiver form available on the night.
Refreshments after the race this year will be in the community centre and will be sponsored by Jenning’s Fuels and Krusts coffee shop.
The organisers also added that this could be your chance to get your own back on that person who pipped you at the post in the Irvinestown or Enniskillen 10k races earlier this summer! |

| City of Derry 5k Mixed fortunes for the Harriers in this race. Michelle Sturm put in the best performance for the club by taking 2nd overall just finishing behind winner Cathy Mc Court North Belfast. Michelle was the winner in the ladies under 20 category.
Marty Cox running in the senior mens race was well below par and did not look to be a series contender up front. Marty was leading the league series however with this poor performance he will have lost vital points and with only two races left he has give himself with a lot of work to do. Mark Gray returned to racing after a small layoff due to injury and he too was not running to his usual standard. The Junior men were not impressive either. Conor Moore ran one of his slowest ever 5k’s. on three previous races Conor had remained unbeaten in the Junior men, however on this occasion all race plans seem to have fallen apart as it did also for team mate Cairan Collins who also returned a lack luster performance on the day.
In the senior Ladies, Angline Mc Cain ran on her best races to date and finished strongly for the Harriers while her club mate Hazel Mc Causland, like her male club colleagues failed to impress returning a slow run on the day.

Harriers in top form for Scrabo
Omagh Harriers embarked on the long journey to Scrabo to compete in the Northern Ireland Junior Mountain Running Championships, and also to contest the male and female open races.
What a night it was for the Omagh club. Patrick Bogues, who has been running some very impressive times but just failing to be in with the medals made no mistake tonight. Patrick, who was running in the mens under 18 give an excellent display of running out striding his competition to win the Northern Ireland title and book his place on the national team for the British and Irish Mountain Running Championships which this year will be staged in Wales.
Andrew Fisher also booked his place on the Northern Ireland team to take second in the under 18 men, after a very good performance . Conor Moore still suffering from tired legs after the weekend competition finished 4th and now must await the selection committee’s judgement.
In the under 20 men, a very much in form Ciaran Collins stormed to victory with a very impressive run.
James Speight simply out ran his competitors in the under 16 age group. James had such a strong run that infact he out ran most of the under 18 age group as well. A well deserved international vest now awaits the young Fermanagh man. James was closely followed home by another first timer on the hills and indeed his first appearance in a Harrier vest, Alistair Lewis.
Young Barry Kelly running in his first mountain competition in the under 14 age group finished in second spot after a very strong run.
The Harrier females were equally impressive.

Claire Lawn running her first ever competitive race won the female under 18 event to take the Northern Ireland title. This was indeed a unique run for Claire to take a title on her first ever club outing.
A very much in form Francis Orr running with tired legs and a bruised knee which she attained after a hard race last weekend still managed to ward off stiff competition to claim the bronze position.
Angela Speight was somewhat unlucky as she got slightly lost in the closing stages of her race but still managed to finish well up the field and Kelly Anne Speight ran the course even though she was suffering from a knee injury which has been troubling her recently.
Marie Therese Speight managed to clinch 2nd in the Vets category with Angeline Mc Cain following very closely behind.

What a performance from Omagh Harriers at the World Trophy Trials today in Rostrevor. With a trip to Switzerland on the cards for the lucky few selected onto the Northern Ireland team, competition was always going to be tough.
Stephen Duncan was the star performer for the club in the Senior Mens event over a very difficult and hotly contested three lap course. Martin Cox finished in 8th place overall with a very fine performance just missing out on selection.
Ciaran Collins gave the performance of his life to win the Junior Mens event in front of Pegasus A.C. athlete Jason Wilson with a fantastic run from Omagh Harrier James Speight in third. Conor Moore finished in fourth place and with Omagh Harrier Noel Collins already pre selected onto the N.I. Team means that Omagh Harriers have three athletes on the Junior Mens team, James is unlucky in that he is too young to travel to the Worlds but shows what a fantastic achievement he made.

Michelle Sturm dominated the Junior Female event with clubmate Angela Speight in third place with both girls securing their place to Switzerland.

ATHLETICS
AAA BRITISH TITLE FOR NOEL COLLINS
Noel Collins has brought his phenomenal track season to a close with another resounding win at the AAA Track and Field Championships at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield.
Racing in the 1500 metres steeplechase Noel took the lead after 2 laps and won the championship by an impressive four seconds in a time of 4.18.78.
Noel had already won the AAA Indoor 1500 metres title earlier in the season so to add the AAA 1500 metre steeplechase title to his growing tally of medals is a unique achievement.
Noels performance on the track this season is unrivalled by any Northern Ireland athlete senior or junior and he is unbeaten in the steeplechase in the U.K. and Ireland this year. In fact this talented 16 year old is ranked No 1 in the U.K. in the Under 17, 1500 metre steeplechase, No 1 in the U.K. in the Under 20, 2000 metre steeplechase, first Under 17 in the senior 3000 metre steeplechase and after his silver medal winning exploits at the European Youth Olympics in Belgrade just last month is now ranked 7th in the World.
It is hardly surprising that the young Omagh Harrier is feeling the effects of the hard training and racing that he has had to endure to get to the level that he is at and the amount of travelling Noel has had to do all over Ireland and the U.K. and further afield, Poland and Belgrade. Noel will now take a richly deserved break before he starts his build up for the cross country season which is just around the corner.

Omagh Harrier athletes were at the Lurig mountain race in Cushendall at the weekend and most of them struggled to put in performances that they are capable of. With a week to go before the World Trophy Trials in Rostrevor the Harriers are going to have to improve on their Lurig results to get selected onto the N.I. Team.
Ciaran Collins who is running very strongly at the moment and is improving over his last few races put in the strongest Omagh challenge to finish 7th overall and 1st junior.
Marty Cox, Ciaran Collins, Patrick Bogues, Conor Moore and Mark Gray all
competed over the challenging course.
COOKSTOWN ROAD RACE SUCCESS FOR STEVEN DUNCAN
Omagh’s Steven Duncan had an emphatic victory in the Cookstown five mile road race at the weekend.
Duncans winning time of 24.42 secured him the top podium finish beating Ballymena and Antrim A.C.’s Jarlath Falls into second place with Iain Bailey of East Antrim in third. Steven has been in great form all season and has won a lot of top quality races around the province and is undoubtedly one of N.I.’s best senior athletes. Also at the Cookstown race was Martin Mc.Lauglin who finished second in his category with a time of 28.51 behind Armagh’s Dermot Kerr.
Derek Somerville, Michael Ward, Joe Corey and John Robson were also racing in Cookstown with Robson picking up second place in his category.

COLLINS SMASHES GAMES RECORD AT CELTIC INTERNATIONAL
Noel Collins has again set a new record, smashing the Celtic Games record for the men under 18 2000m steeple chase. Robert Fitzsimons from Athletics Ireland set a new standard in 2006 with a winning and record time of 6.25.21 mins. This was a short lived record as Collins had his sights set from the gun to not only claim victory but to set a new record and this he did. Noels race plan was to go out quick from the gun. Indeed the young Harrier went through the first lap in a blistering pace of 1.02. Noel then clocked 2.06 at the 800m mark and at this stage he had opened up a huge distance of 30m from the chasing field made up of Irish, Scottish and Welsh athletes. With only the clock to beat now Noel continued his impressive run and crossed the finish line in 5.59.76 smashing the previous record by a huge 25 seconds. Noels next race is the AAA Championships in England.

Harriers in Action at the Final City Of Derry 5k Series.
Several Omagh Harriers were in action for the final race of the City of Derry 5k series which was staged in Muff Co. Donegal.
Muff proved to be a difficult and some what demanding course, making the athletes work hard for placings.
Omagh’s Marty Cox was again well placed finishing in 4th position in the senior men’s section. Although the final standings are not officially published yet Cox must now be firm favourite to claim the overall series title.
Ciaran Collins starting to hit form, put in a good run, winning the mens under 20 category with Conor Moore claiming 2nd under 20. Conor may well have done enough to clinch 3rd overall in the series. Mark Gray continues to improve over the 5k distance finishing well up the field in the senior men.
The Harriers will be in action again this weekend with several athletes competing in the Cookstown 5 mile road race and some athletes travelling to compete in the Lurig Challenge mountain race.

Harrier athletes give fine performances at World Mountain Running event.
Angela Speight claimed first junior female Irish athlete to cross the line at the World Trophy in Switzerland at the weekend. Angela, who give one of her best performances to date, was closely followed by team mate Michelle Sturm. An ever dependable Michelle who despite carrying a leg injury, ran a very determined race, with Kerry Iveston (North Down) completing the scoring for the Northern Ireland team who this year finished 14th beating the Irish team by several points. This is the first year that Northern Ireland have been able to get well clear of bottom positions at the Worlds.
In the Junior men’s event Northern Ireland as like the girls give one of their best performances to date to finish 14th team and well clear of bottom place.
A superb display from Noel Collins who like his female club mate Angela, was first Irish athlete to cross the line. Noel was followed home by his brother Ciaran who despite developing bad blisters on both feet finished very strongly. Conor Moore who was going through a some what poor phase leading up to the Worlds certainly bounced back into form when it mattered. Conor was 3rd scorer for Northern Ireland while Jason Wilson (Pegasus) was 4th team member to finish.
The Senior Ladies saw Harrier Francis Orr in her first major International. Francis who despite being slightly nervous at the start of the race, showed no signs over the demanding two lap course ran ran very strongly helping her Northern Ireland team to gain one of their highest placing ever at these championships.
In the Senior Men race Stephen Duncan running in his second World Championship was second scorer for Northern Ireland. After the first lap Stephen was leading the Irish charge, however halfway through the final lap he developed cramp in his leg and had to curtail his speed to ensure a finish. As with all the other categories the Northern Ireland team finished clear of bottom placing and in doing so beat their Irish counter parts in team placing.

Preview Of Next Weeks Cross Country
11th November Cross Country ChampionshipsTo Be A Thriller.
Next weekend will see some furious action at the Ulster and Northern Ireland Cross Country uneven age group championships which also incorporates the Ulster Novice Championships, which this year will be staged at the Finn Valley centre, Donegal.
The Harriers will be fielding athletes in all the various age groups.
The under 15 should see young Barry Kelly finish in the top twelve which will give him an Ulster selection.
James Speight will be one to watch in the under 17 and like Barry should do enough for an Ulster selection.
In the men’s under 19 there are no changes to the Harriers squad which took bronze medal a fortnight ago in the under 18 category. This should be a good battle and once again and the top teams should be St. Malachy’s (Belfast) Finn Valley Omagh and North Belfast with North Down also being a possible strong contender for the medals, although at this age level the Harriers will find the going tough.
The Novice Men and Ladies race should prove an interesting battle for positions from the leading clubs. The Harriers took 2nd in both male and female categories last year, however this year the Harriers will be without Marty Cox and Stevie Duncan who are ineligible to compete, otherwise the team remain fairly unchanged. City of Derry, last years winners should once again prove stiff competition along with Finn Valley and Letterkenny.
On paper the Harriers female team looks strong, but is expected to meet strong opposition from the Donegal based clubs. City of Derry also have a strong reputation in this race.
Fast time for Helen in Dublin Marathon.
Congratulations to Helen Stockdale who coasted to a very fast time in this years Dublin Marathon finishing in a time of 3hrs27mins.
Helen finished 9th in her category.
Excellent Performances From Harriers at Cross Country Championships.
At the Northern Ireland and Ulster age group cross country held this year at the University of Ulster Jordanstown, the Harriers put on a fine display of cross country running bringing both new and seasoned talent to the fore.
The action kicked off for the Harriers in the boys under 14 with Barry Kelly finishing 6th leading home his team, Conor Meyler was next in followed by new face Eamon Logue.
In the Under 16 boys another gusty display from young James Speight to finish in 8th spot in what will be one of the most competitive races of the year.
In the under 18 category it was status quo regards teams with the same top three teams to the fore as per previous years, St Malachy’s, Finn Valley and Omagh Harriers dominating the winter cross country.
Individual winner was Andrew Gourley from Willowfield closely followed by Noel Collins Omagh and Dan King Milford. Team wise according to reports in national press the Harriers were not considered to be a threat. However you only have to look at previous results to see the strength of the Omagh club on cross country. Conor Moore as always giving 100% and Andrew Fisher always dependable to give full commitment backed up ably by Lorcan Healy and new signing Sean Monaghan. This was indeed a well deserved Bronze medal for the Harriers competing in the first major cross country of the season. The team will indeed build from this result and with two more major races before Christmas the Harriers should be challenging for top positions.
In the Senior Ladies 3 mile race, Marie Therese Speight ran very strongly to take first in her vets category.
Omagh Harriers Ciaran Collins who was representing his University (UUJ) finished strongly in the 5 mile mens open race and should be feeling confident for his next race in a few weeks time at the Finn Valley Centre.
JORDANSTOWN CROSS COUNTRY.
The bus will be leaving Omagh Leisure Centre on Saturday morning at 10am sharp to take teams to Jordanstown.
Weather forecast is for poor weather so all young ones are reminded to bring spare warm clothing and lunch.
COMBER CUP
The annual Comber was held today (20/10/07) over a traditional cross country course which includes a mixture of hills up and down and some fast flat running.
Marie Therese Speight was first to go and finished a very creditable 4th place against some fine opposition in her category in the vets event.
Young James Speight running in a hotly contested under 16 event also put in a fine performance to clinch 2nd spot.
Mark Gray ran the open race and although found the going fast finished well in his first cross country this year.
In the under 18 men’s event, the Harriers fielded Conor Moore, Andrew Fisher and Noel Collins. Noel took runners up spot to winner Andrew Gurley (Willowfield Harriers) with Conor Moore running into 4th spot and hot on his heels Andrew Fisher in 5th spot.
The Harriers will be in action again next weekend when the club will be in action in Jordanstown competing in the Ulster and Northern Ireland cross country championships.
Busy weekend for Harriers.
The Harriers have had a busy few days with competition.
In the Armagh 10 mile road race top scorers were Stevie Duncan who came second just narrowly defeated by St. Malachys Joe Mc Allister. Marty Mc Laughlin and Albert Law all ran respectable times and finished well for the club. In the Ladies Helen Stockdale ran a surperb run to take first in her category with Patricia Campbell following close behind to give the club a good result.
