SCRABO MOUNTAIN RACE.

Eoghan Totten and Aine McCann were the winners of the NI Junior Mountain Running Championships at Scrabo Hill on Wednesday evening.

Totten of Newcastle AC continued the fine form he had shown against senior opposition in the Mourne Hill & Dale Series and took the Junior title with a clear win.  He scorched round the 2 mile course and 500 foot climb in 16 minutes 43 seconds to finish 47 seconds ahead of Omagh Harrier Conor Moore, with Andrew Fisher, also Omagh third. Conor claimed the Northern Ireland under 18 title for the event, while Andrew took 2nd.

McCann of East Down AC is a British Junior Orienteering Champion and she secured the NI Mountain Running title, clocking 20.08 to win by 66 seconds.  Lauren O’Donnelly - Anderson of North Belfast Harriers was runner up with Omagh Harrier Sarah Moore third in 21.53. Sarah was the first under 14 girl home and lifted the under 14 title with a very fine run.   Other Harriers to compete were Sabrina Mc Grinder who finished fourth overall and 3rd in the under 16 category and Mebth Mc Elduff who running in her first off road race put in a strong performance.  Claire Lawn who won the under 18 title last year found the going tough on the second lap but still managed to win the under 18 category.

The junior boys under 14 saw a superb performance from young Barry Kelly who finished 4th in the overall event and easily won the under 14 title while bronze medal position went to another young Harrier Eamon Logue.

In the senior mens field, Marty Cox who was in second position for most of the race found himself in some difficulty due to athletes taking a wrong turn. The mishap cost Cox as he had to stop resulting in the Omagh man eventually finishing well down the field.  Lorcan Heally finished strongly followed home by Mark Grey who also ran well over the demanding course.
